How to choose your graphics card

In a gaming PC, the graphics card (GPU) is almost always the part that defines your experience the most — and also the one that weighs heaviest on the budget. Choosing it well is the difference between overpaying for power you won't use, or falling short and seeing your games stutter. The key to getting it right is simpler than it seems: start with your monitor.

The starting point: what resolution do you play at?

Your monitor's resolution is the biggest factor when choosing a GPU. The higher it is, the more work for the card, and therefore the more powerful (and expensive) it needs to be. There are three tiers:

  • 1080p (Full HD): the most common and affordable resolution. It asks less of the GPU, so you'll do well with entry-level cards.
  • 1440p (2K / QHD): today's "sweet spot" — noticeably better than 1080p without the demands of 4K. Needs a mid-range GPU.
  • 4K (Ultra HD): the highest image quality, but quadruples the work compared to 1080p. Only makes sense with a high-end GPU.

The golden rule: don't buy a 4K-class GPU if your monitor is 1080p — you'd be paying for power the screen can't display. And the reverse: an entry-level card will struggle on a 4K monitor.

VRAM: the card's own memory

VRAM is the graphics card's own memory, measured in GB. It's used to store textures and data for whatever it's rendering. If you run short, you get stutters or blurry textures, especially at higher resolutions.

As a reference for 2026:

  • 8 GB: enough for 1080p in most games, and perfect for esports (Valorant, CS2). At 1440p with high settings it starts getting tight in some demanding titles.
  • 12 GB: comfortable for 1440p without worries.
  • 16 GB or more: what 4K needs to run smoothly, and also useful if you also edit video or work with 3D.

A tip many builders give: if you want your PC to last several years, choose VRAM one tier above your current resolution. If you play at 1440p today, aim for a card with generous VRAM in case you jump to 4K later.

Concrete examples by tier

To make all this concrete, here's how it translates into real cards from this generation:

  • For 1080p: an RTX 5060 (8 GB) covers you comfortably and is the entry point.
  • For 1440p: the RTX 5070 (12 GB) is the sweet spot, with margin for everything at high settings.
  • For 4K: the RTX 5080 (16 GB) makes the jump to 4K comfortably.

On the AMD side, the Radeon RX 9000 lineup offers equivalent alternatives at every tier, often with more VRAM for the same price — worth comparing.

Don't forget the power supply

Every card draws a certain amount of watts, and you need a PSU that can power it with margin to spare. As a general guide for this generation: an RTX 5060 pairs well with a 550W PSU, the RTX 5070 with 650W, and the RTX 5080 with 850W. Balance with the processor

A very powerful GPU paired with a very weak processor won't perform at its best: the CPU "holds back" the card. That's what's called a bottleneck. The idea is to match tiers: an entry-level GPU pairs well with an entry-level CPU, a high-end GPU needs a CPU that can keep up. They don't need to be identical in tier, but there shouldn't be a huge gap between them.
