Case and cooling guide

The case and cooling are among the most underrated parts when building a PC — they don't add direct performance, but they determine whether everything else fits, breathes, and stays cool. Here's how to choose both without overcomplicating it.

Case size: form factor

Cases come in standard sizes, matching the motherboards of the same name: Full-tower (large, maximum space and airflow), Mid-tower (the most common, a good balance between size and capacity), and compact / Mini-ITX (small, great when space is limited, but more restrictive for large parts).

For most people, a Mid-tower is the safest choice: it fits almost any modern motherboard and graphics card, has good airflow, and doesn't take up excessive space. Compact cases are great if size is your priority, but check carefully that your parts (especially the GPU) fit — as we saw in the compatibility guide, maximum GPU length is a real spec you need to check, not guess.

Airflow matters more than looks

A good-looking case with poor ventilation makes your PC run hotter and noisier than it needs to. What makes a case "breathe well":

  • Mesh or perforated panels instead of solid tempered glass on the sides — they look less "premium" but let in more air.
  • Room for multiple fans, ideally intake at the front and hot air exhaust at the back/top.
  • Good cable management — a messy interior blocks airflow without you even noticing.

You don't need to buy 6 extra fans on day one: most cases come with 1-2 preinstalled, enough to start. You can add more later if you notice high temperatures.

Ad space

Cooling: air vs liquid (AIO)

Cooling keeps the processor cool, since it's the part that generates the most sustained heat. There are two paths:

  • Air: a metal heatsink with one or more fans. It's the simplest, most reliable, and most affordable option — no liquid that could leak, and for most processors it's more than enough. Large "tower" models perform surprisingly well, even with powerful CPUs.
  • Liquid (AIO): a radiator with fans connected to the processor through a block with coolant in a closed loop. It usually cools the most demanding processors better (16+ cores, high power draw) and looks tidier inside the case, but costs more and needs specific space in the case (you need to confirm the radiator fits).

For most gaming builds, a good tower air cooler is the most practical choice. It only makes sense to upgrade to liquid if your processor is very high-end or if the interior aesthetics really matter to you.

Three things to check before buying

  1. Does the case support your GPU's length? Every case specifies a maximum length in millimeters — compare it against your card.
  2. Does the cooler fit in height? Large air coolers can be too tall for compact cases.
  3. Does the AIO radiator have somewhere to mount? If you go liquid, confirm the case has room (120mm, 240mm, 360mm) to install it, usually at the front or top.

In summary

For most people: a Mid-tower case with good airflow and a tower air cooler is the simplest, most reliable combination. Only go compact if space is a real priority, and only go liquid cooling if your processor justifies it.
